New Situation for Humanitarian Aid in Syria: action medeor Strengthens Health Structures in Syria Press releases 09 December 2024 The current political situation in Syria also represents a new challenge for humanitarian aid organizations like action medeor. “The country's infrastructure has been destroyed or is inadequate in many parts due to the years of grueling civil war,” explains Sid Peruvemba, spokesperson for the board of action medeor. “The upcoming needs will be enormous and represent a major challenge for the already strained supply situation. Immediate humanitarian aid can also make an important contribution to a democratic and peaceful reorganization of Syria,” says Peruvemba. Together with local partner organizations, action medeor is involved in providing medical care for people in Syria. “Our partners have established medical emergency teams that support the maintenance of life-saving health services,” reports Peruvemba. However, this is currently a difficult task. “The larger hospitals in the country are only partially operational, and many smaller health centers are no longer functional,” says Peruvemba. There is currently a lack of personnel and fuel for emergency transportation, among other things. “There is also a high demand for strengthening blood transfusion services and blood banks, trauma treatments, supplies of anesthetics, and medical consumables for dialysis,” Peruvemba lists as some of the current areas of action. Therefore, together with its local partners, action medeor has simultaneously begun procuring urgently needed medical supplies. “The list of needed items ranges from ambulances to medical consumables to medications,” explains Peruvemba. Procurement on site is being evaluated, while aid shipments from Germany have already started. In recent days, the “World's Emergency Pharmacy,” as action medeor is also called, has prepared an aid shipment for Syria at its medication warehouse in Tönisvorst, which is now ready for dispatch. At the same time, efforts are underway to determine which aid supplies can be sourced locally. To improve medication supply in northwest Syria, action medeor has also started constructing a medication warehouse that is expected to be completed in the coming months. “The last few days have been historic for the Syrians, comparable to the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany,” says Sid Peruvemba. “We want to do everything we can to help guide the country and its people toward a better future.” Those who wish to support the work of action medeor can do so by making a donation.
