This facility is being constructed with substantial support from action medeor. The relief organization has been actively involved in flood relief efforts in the Ahr region and other flood-affected areas in North Rhine-Westphalia since the first days after the disaster. “The flood disaster in 2021 significantly worsened the situation for people in need of care and caregivers in the Ahr Valley. Many buildings are still not fully restored, families live in very tight spaces, often across multiple generations, and the distances to care facilities are long,” explains Sid Peruvemba, spokesperson for action medeor's board. “That’s why it was clear to us that we would get involved as a relief organization,” Peruvemba adds. The people in the region have been facing multiple burdens since the flood. They continue their jobs, work on rebuilding, take care of their children, and often also provide care for relatives. “The establishment and operation of the day care facility will bring significant relief to the community,” says Peruvemba. The high demand for this service is evident, with a waiting list of future guests already in place even before construction has begun. The facility in Hönningen-Liers will offer 16 places in a 300 sqm building, with structural measures ensuring protection against potential flood damage. The day care will be operated by the Adenau-Altenahr Social Service. The project was also funded by donations from the “Aktion Deutschland Hilft” alliance, of which action medeor is a member.
