action medeor brings medicines to Sudan

Relief shipment ready for dispatch: The medical aid organization action medeor is sending medical aid to Sudan.

In the medication warehouse of the "world's emergency pharmacy" in Tönisvorst, the pallets labeled "Sudan Emergency Aid" are ready for dispatch to help people in the world's largest humanitarian crisis. "People in Sudan are dying of hunger and treatable diseases, so we have to help," explains Markus Bremers, press officer of action medeor, justifying the relief shipment. The humanitarian situation in Sudan is indeed catastrophic. Due to an ongoing armed conflict, nearly 11 million people are displaced, and about 25 million people in the country depend on humanitarian aid—almost half of the population. "An acute famine has now broken out in the North Darfur region, which is the highest alert level," reports Bremers.

The relief shipment that action medeor is sending these days contains 1,500 kilograms of medicines, including antibiotics, painkillers, infusion solutions, vitamin tablets, as well as medical supplies such as surgical gloves and bandages. "Healthcare in Sudan is becoming increasingly difficult," says Bremers, "so this aid is urgently needed." According to the WHO, more than two-thirds of all major hospitals in the affected areas are out of operation, Bremers reports. "And the remaining functioning health facilities are overwhelmed because they lack medicines and medical equipment, among other things."

The relief shipment from action medeor is intended to support these health facilities and help alleviate the dire situation for people in Sudan. Those who wish to support the work of action medeor can do so by making a donation. This can be done online at www.medeor.de—where you can also leave an address for a donation receipt—or via the traditional way to IBAN DE78320500000000009993 at Sparkasse Krefeld, donation reference: "Sudan Emergency Aid."
