Socks for a good cause

Hermine Franken has a very special relationship with the Tönisvorst-based medical aid organization action medeor. "As a teenager, I helped sort the medicines that were sent all over the world from Vorst in the early days," says the 76-year-old. Now, 60 years later, the native of Vorst has once again started volunteering for action medeor.

Together with her daughter Hildegard Goumans, Hermine Franken knitted socks. They estimate that they made about 120 pairs. The sock basket in the Kempen household goods store Electra Jarren was certainly well-stocked throughout the winter and into the cold April, confirms businesswoman Angelika Jarren, who gladly supported the initiative.

"Our motto was: No one should get cold feet in these challenging times," says Hildegard Goumans. The lovely colorful socks, available in various sizes, were sold at a fixed price, but: "Most customers paid more when they heard that the money would be donated to action medeor," says Angelika Jarren.

By the end of the initiative, almost €2,100 had been raised for the Tönisvorst aid organization. The money will go to the healthcare projects that action medeor implements worldwide in collaboration with partner organizations. For Hildegard Goumans and Hermine Franken, this initiative is not over. They plan to knit socks for charity again next fall and winter and sell them at Electra Jarren. The two women would appreciate donations of leftover yarn. "Anyone who has leftover four-ply sock yarn can drop it off at the store," says Hildegard Franken.
