Two people died in the attack on the drinking water station, which is operated as part of a cooperation project between action medeor and the partner organization IBC (International Blue Crescent). "The attack occurred as the team was in the process of filling a water tank in the city with fresh drinking water for the population," reports Sid Peruvemba, spokesperson for the board of action medeor. Several drones attacked the drinking water tanker; the truck driver and another helper sustained serious injuries. Witnesses to the attack immediately alerted an ambulance, but the truck driver died on the way to the hospital. "An employee of our partner organization IBC underwent surgery overnight but succumbed to his injuries this morning," Peruvemba reports. "We mourn with the families of the deceased and stand by the relatives now. At the same time, we are once again shocked that humanitarian aid workers are being targeted by military attacks while trying to help the suffering population," says Peruvemba. "The inhumane attacks on civilian targets and the constant disregard for international humanitarian law must stop. Those who help others in dire need must not become targets!" Action medeor and IBC are now jointly ensuring that the families of the victims are taken care of, including organizing psychological support for the Ukrainian team of IBC. "Families, friends, and colleagues can now count on our solidarity. We will not leave anyone alone," Peruvemba emphasizes. Action medeor and IBC operate several drinking water distribution points in Kherson, which are regularly supplied with drinking water by tankers. More than 3,000 tons of drinking water have already been distributed to the suffering population in the city center of Kherson alone. Additionally, the suffering people in the city are being supplied with bread and gas. The distribution of drinking water at the site of the attack in Kherson is now closed until further notice, as is the distribution of bread and gas. Approximately 1,000 people have used these aids daily in the past. They are now temporarily on their own. Before the war, around 324,000 people lived in Kherson. Currently, about 100,000 people, including almost 10,000 children, live in the city and the region – often under the most difficult conditions. Many households have no electricity, no gas, no running water. People are therefore dependent on humanitarian aid.
