"In Germany, one pharmacist supplies around 1,500 people. But in Tanzania, there is one pharmacist for every 32,000 inhabitants,” Angela Zeithammer, Managing Director of the action medeor Foundation, says. "When people in Tanzania fall ill, they often have less chance of receiving good medical care because there are too few specialists. This is exacerbated by the lack of medicines."

In order to remedy such shortages, the action medeor Foundation supports the training and further education of pharmaceutical and medical staff. One example of this is the Felix Wiemes Memorial Prize, which the foundation awards once a year - now in its ninth year. The Felix Wiemes Memorial Prize supports outstanding students at the School of Pharmacy at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. The two current prize winners are Rotta Charles Lukiza and Mbonea Erick Mbwambo. In their pharmacy studies, both deal with the safety and availability of medicines, among other things.

“My goal is to become a competent pharmacist,” Luzika says, describing his motivation, while for Mbwambo it's a different matter: “I want to help solve problems in our healthcare system with the help of well-collected health data,” he says. Both are now being supported by the Felix Wiemes Foundation Fund, which is run under the umbrella of the action-medeor Foundation.
