Vice President of the Bundestag travels to earthquake region: Aydan Özoğuz visits action medeor project in Kilis Press releases 18 April 2023 During her trip to the Turkish earthquake regions, the Vice President of the German Bundestag, Aydan Özoğuz, also visited an action medeor aid project. The parliamentarian visited the Turkish border town of Kilis to see for herself the relief work being carried out there with support from Germany. action medeor is working with a local partner organization to provide the people affected by the earthquake in Kilis with food, clothing, blankets and hygiene products. "Kilis is located directly on the Turkish-Syrian border, so many of the people living here come from Syria. They have fled the civil war there and have already lost their homes once,” Sid Peruvemba, spokesman for the board of action medeor, explains. "The earthquake has once again deprived these people of the few securities they still had. We are now providing them with the things they need most to survive." Aydan Özoğuz visited the site to find out how the relief efforts are progressing and being organized. She spoke to helpers and those affected and then praised the work of the aid organizations: “What is being done with help from Germany for those affected by the terrible earthquakes is impressive. Thanks to the support, it has been possible to provide many people, who are often faced with the ruins of their existence and have often lost everything, with the bare necessities in a short space of time and provide them with a temporary roof over their heads. However, my visit also made it very clear to me how much the inhabitants of the earthquake regions remain dependent on help." Together with its Turkish partner organization IBC, action medeor is providing support for earthquake victims in several Turkish cities, but also in the neighboring northwest of Syria. Due to the civil war, the healthcare system there is virtually non-existent, which is why action medeor is concentrating on providing medical care to the population. With mobile clinics and teams of doctors, the aid workers visit the people in the tent cities and help wherever they can. In addition to action medeor, Aydan Özoğuz also visited other aid organizations of the alliance organization Aktion Deutschland Hilft, of which Özoğuz is a member of the board of trustees. action medeor is one of 23 member organizations in this alliance.
