"Many have nothing left, so we now have to help them with the bare essentials: Clothing, food, shelter, hygiene, medicine,” Bremers describes. In addition, life jackets and remedies against ticks and mosquitoes are now increasingly needed.

The drinking water supply in the regions around Kherson and Mykolaiv is a particular concern for the aid workers at the moment. “The infrastructure was already damaged by the war, and we expect the destruction of the dam and the flooding to cause much greater supply problems,” Bremers reports. "If people no longer have clean water, we can't rule out the possibility that diseases such as cholera will spread as a result. We are now preparing for this."
