A new day care facility for Ahr Valley

A new day care facility for Ahr Valley - what has long been a dream for many people in need of care and their relatives is now set to become a reality. With the support of the health aid organization action medeor, the Adenau-Altenahr social care center will operate such a facility in the future. A new building is to be erected for this purpose in the district of Liers in the local community of Hönningen - conveniently located right in the middle of the municipalities of Adenau and Altenahr, the two municipal sponsors of the social center.

The new day care facility is financed by the health aid organization action medeor, which has been active in flood relief in the Ahr valley since the first days after the flood disaster. The “emergency pharmacy of the world”, as action medeor is also known, has already supported various projects in the region since July 2021, including transition rooms for a pharmacy and a doctor's practice in Kalenborn and the organization of senior citizens' afternoons in Rech. “By supporting the new day care facility, we want to make a lasting contribution to helping older people who have lost their familiar living environment after the flood to re-establish social contacts and meet others,” Alexandra Geiser and Markus Bremers from action medeor say, explaining the aid organization's commitment, which also uses donations from the alliance “Aktion Deutschland Hilft”.

For the Adenau-Altenahr social care center, the establishment of a day care facility is also an important step. “We are closing a gap not only in our range of care services, but also in general regional care for people in need of care,” Uwe Szymanski, head of the social care center, and Jürgen de Temple, chairman of the support association, say. "Day care is an important link between inpatient and outpatient care. It enables older people to maintain their existing abilities and participate in the community. And last but not least, it also relieves the burden on relatives,” Szymanski says. "Even two years after the flood, many families are still busy rebuilding and are desperately looking for opportunities to have their parents in need of care looked after during the day. Now we will finally create these opportunities."

The municipalities of Adenau and Altenahr were actively involved in the search for a suitable location for the day care facility, as well as in the examination of the building regulations and the initial coordination with other authorities. “We are delighted to have now found an optimal location in Liers after examining various site options,” summed up the association mayors of Adenau and Altenahr, Guido Nisius and Dominik Gieler. “It was important to us that the facility was easily accessible from both municipalities,” explains Nisius, who is also the chairman of the special purpose association of the social care center, “that was one of the reasons why the special purpose association was very happy to give the green light for this project.”

The building for the day care facility will be built in Hönningen-Liers right next to the transitional community center. “This will also give us a good social connection to the activities in the district, across all generations,” Jürgen Schwarzmann, Mayor of Hönningen, says. An L-shaped building is planned which, in addition to a large common room, will also have a living room and relaxation rooms for the guests. According to architect Ralf Kriechel's plans, there will be enough space to cook, eat, play or simply enjoy the day together - in good weather also on the planned outdoor terrace. And, of course, flood protection has also been considered: the building will be fully equipped with bulkhead doors.

“We are firmly convinced that this project will be a significant leap in quality for the care situation in our region,” Guido Nisius and Dominik Gieler conclude, “and we are delighted to be able to offer our citizens a significantly improved care infrastructure in the near future. Our thanks go to the donors from action medeor and Aktion Deutschland Hilft who have made this possible."
