Finally playing again! Outside again at last! For the children and young people in the local community of Mayschoß, a little dream is coming true these days. An outdoor sports area has now been opened on the Ahr-Rotweinstraße near the Lochmühle, where they can finally play basketball and soccer again. Ball fences and fitness equipment have also been erected there, and construction work has progressed rapidly in recent weeks. The initiative for the sports area came from the children and young people of Mayschoß themselves, who approached the local youth club with their wish. Annelies Baltes, head of the youth club, took on the project and found many supporters, including the aid organization action medeor. The health aid organization from the Lower Rhine region pledged to cover the costs for the construction of the basketball court, the ball fences and the sports equipment. In addition, action medeor helped to finance the earthworks, which were completed in the spring. “We have been in contact with Annelies Baltes since 2021 to see how we could help,” Markus Bremers, press spokesman for action medeor, recalls. “When we were informed that there were hardly any sports facilities left for the children and young people in Mayschoß and the surrounding area, it was a matter of course for us to help find a temporary solution.” The municipality's original sports ground fell victim to the floods in the summer of 2021, and the new planning has been ongoing ever since. Planning, construction and ownership issues also still had to be clarified for the temporary solution on Ahr-Rotweinstraße. “But we have been able to see the construction progress since March,” Annelies Baltes says happily. The result is a modern outdoor sports facility that has been christened the “JUMA Stadium Mayschoß” - JUMA because it benefits young people in Mayschoß. “I am very happy that we have found so many supporters for the sports ground for our young people,” Annelies Baltes says happily, “so much good has happened here in recent months.” In addition to several aid organizations, clubs and private individuals have also donated to the project. The largest donation came from action medeor, with the aid organization from the Lower Rhine pledging more than 100,000 euros. “It was and is a matter close to the hearts of the donors,” Annelies Baltes emphasize, “and for the children and young people, it really is a small dream come true.” The health aid organization action medeor usually works to make medicines and medical care available to people in poorer countries. After the floods in western Germany in 2021, the aid organization became active in Germany for the first time. Its activities focused on the Ahr valley. In the first days after the floods, action medeor provided medical supplies. Shortly afterwards, action medeor worked with Pharmacists Without Borders to set up a container facility in the local community of Kalenborn to house a doctor's surgery and a pharmacy from Altenahr. This enabled several thousand people in the region to continue receiving medical care.</pY In the past, action medeor has already supported senior citizens' afternoons and educational dance and theater activities for children. In Mayschoß, the aid organization is now actively involved in setting up exercise and sports activities for children and young people. In the coming months, action medeor will also be supporting the Adenau-Altenahr social welfare center in the construction of a day care facility in the Liers district of Hönningen.
