After an on-site assessment of the situation, the conditions have now been created to support around 200 families in the severely damaged city of Derna who have lost their homes and all their belongings. “In total, around 1000 people will be provided with acute emergency aid, i.e. food, water, hygiene kits, clothing, blankets, mattresses and household items,” Sid Peruvemba, spokesman for the board of action medeor, explains. This aid is implemented together with local partner organizations with whom action medeor has been working for years. "We are in contact with established partners who have teams on the ground. This aid is largely organized locally, so we will procure as many relief supplies locally as possible,” Peruvemba reports. "Anything that cannot be procured locally, we will deliver from Germany. We are assuming that it will take a long time, because people will need support not just in the next few days, but for weeks and months,” Peruvemba looks ahead. The first steps now will be to identify the beneficiaries and to procure and assemble the relief supplies. “Our aid should particularly benefit those people who have lost everything and are no longer able to provide for themselves, for example because they only have a low family income,” Peruvemba explains. At the same time, the relief measures are being organized and the distribution coordinated with the local authorities. This aid is financed exclusively by donations. And considerable financial resources are needed. “To provide 1,000 people with the essentials for 30 days, we expect costs of around 165,000 euros,” Peruvemba reports.
