Mary Kisima: On her way to becoming a pharmacist in Tanzania - with German support

Mary Kisima has big plans: To one day hold a management position in a large healthcare facility, to encourage other young women to pursue a career in science, to help heal the sick as a pharmacist. The 32-year-old Tanzanian is supported by a scholarship from the action medeor Foundation, which is funding her master's degree in pharmacy at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Tanzania.

For Mary Kisima, the scholarship means above all that she can devote herself to her pharmaceutical education without financial worries: “I am so determined to follow this path, and with the support of action medeor I can fully focus on my studies and devote all my energy and concentration to it,” she says happily.

The action medeor foundation specifically supports various projects in the field of education and training for medical and pharmaceutical personnel. “With this special focus on education and training, we are making a particularly sustainable contribution to strengthening healthcare in poorer regions of the world,” Dr. Angela Zeithammer, Honorary Managing Director of the action medeor Foundation, reports. “In many regions of the world, people do not have sufficient access to healthcare,” Zeithammer explains. "This is often not only due to a lack of money, but also to a lack of knowledge or human resources. Well-trained local specialists are therefore the key to a strong healthcare system - which is why we are particularly pleased to be able to support such a committed woman as Mary Kisima on her journey."

Mary Kisima has already set off on her next adventure in mid-September: As part of her Master's degree, the pharmacist is currently spending a research semester at the University of Bergen in Norway. Here she will devote herself entirely to working on her Master's thesis: The investigation of undesirable side effects of local anesthetics in hospitals in Tanzania.
