© action medeor Info © action medeor Floods in Tanzania Press releases 30 April 2024 After weeks of heavy rains caused dramatic flooding in Tanzania and neighboring Kenya, action medeor is sending medical supplies to the affected region. Christoph Bonsmann, a member of the action medeor board in Tönisvorst until the end of March and Director General Africa for action medeor in Tanzania since April, is experiencing the extreme weather first hand. "Since we arrived in Tanzania at the beginning of April, it has been raining almost non-stop. Hundreds of thousands of people have already had to flee their homes and important infrastructure has been destroyed,” reports Bonsmann from action medeor's Tanzanian base near the capital Dar es Salaam. "The floods have caused many injuries and unfortunately also fatalities. We are currently preparing a delivery of medical supplies for hospitals in the particularly affected Rufiji region in our medicine warehouse." In Tanzania alone, more than 150 people have died in floods and landslides caused by the heavy rainfall in recent weeks. Experts believe that the above-average rainfall was triggered by a combination of the El Nino weather phenomenon, which is being further exacerbated by climate change. Back in December, more than 80 people died and many others were injured in a landslide in Tanzania. action medeor also helped Tanzania with medicines and medical supplies. Since 2005, action medeor has been supplying health facilities in Tanzania with medicines, medical supplies and medical technology through its own office in the country. Today, action medeor Tanzania has three medicine warehouses in the country as well as its own production facility for laboratory reagents including a training center for medical technology.
