During a tour of the medicine warehouse in Tönisvorst, the President of the Bundestag inquired about current aid deliveries and the logistical processes of humanitarian aid. Bas was particularly interested in the structure and development of the “emergency pharmacy of the world”, as action medeor is also known. “We were founded 60 years ago as a pure medical aid organization, but today we are much more than that,” Siegfried Thomaßen, President of action medeor, told her. Although the worldwide shipment of medicines from Germany is still an important pillar of the aid organization, Thomaßen explained, the implementation of humanitarian aid programs and the training of pharmacists and medical technicians are now other important fields of activity for action medeor. “And we will strategically strengthen and further expand our locations in Tanzania and Malawi in the future,” Thomaßen announced.

Bärbel Bas was impressed after her visit to Tönisvorst: “It was important for me to take a look behind the scenes. action medeor has lean processes and is professionally organized worldwide. And that doesn't just apply to logistics, but also to training people and creating sustainable healthcare structures on the ground. There is more to it than meets the eye,” the President of Parliament states after her visit.

Udo Schiefner, who accompanied Bärbel Bas on her visit to Tönisvorst, has also been a member of the action medeor advisory board for many years. “This is a matter close to my heart, because I know how much good is happening here and how committed the people from our region are to global aid projects,” Schiefner concluded.
