The members' meeting in the anniversary year was therefore used as an opportunity to take a look at the beginnings and development of the aid organization. “When action medeor was founded, the German Chancellor was Ludwig Erhard and the political climate was characterized by the goal of ‘prosperity for all’,” Board Spokesman Sid Peruvemba said while looking back. "action medeor is still pursuing this goal today, for all people, worldwide. As a civil society actor, we try to set an example of global solidarity,” Peruvemba states. action medeor, the ‘emergency pharmacy of the world’, was founded in 1964 as a pure medical aid organization. In the meantime, the aid organization has diversified, with medical aid now just one of many pillars. In addition, there are humanitarian aid and development cooperation programs, as well as the worldwide training and further education of pharmacists and medical technicians, for example in Tanzania and Malawi, where action medeor has additional locations. This is also reflected in the figures presented at the General Assembly. The 2023 annual report shows that action medeor was able to directly help around 1.6 million people in need with its humanitarian aid and development cooperation programs alone. Indirectly, around 6.5 million people in 26 countries benefited from support from Tönisvorst. This aid was provided by around 130 employees worldwide, 86 of them in Germany, supported by 65 volunteers. Siegfried Thomaßen, President of action medeor, turned his attention to the past year 2023 at the General Assembly. “Once again, it was a special year that once again challenged our aid organization,” Thomaßen said. The earthquakes in Turkey, Syria, Morocco and Afghanistan, the floods in Libya, Congo and Tanzania and the ongoing war in Ukraine were just as much a part of this. “Under these circumstances, we have once again proven the efficiency of our aid organization - and we have set a strategic course for the future,” Thomaßen emphasized. He pointed out that former board member Christoph Bonsmann had now taken on the role of “General Director Africa” and that the locations in Tanzania and Malawi would be significantly strengthened in the future. At the same time, the management team has been reorganized. “We are delighted that we have been able to appoint Angela Zeithammer and Kerstin Steuler to the extended board and that the association will continue to be represented by Sid Peruvemba as board spokesperson,” Thomaßen said. The association president also praised the excellent cooperation between full-time staff and volunteers at action medeor. “This is exemplary and sets us apart,” Thomaßen praised. "We remain true to these values, even as we change dynamically and adapt to new challenges. That's why I'm not worried about the future of action medeor."
