Syria: Nisreen Regains Her Strength

Even in crisis regions, small steps forward can make a big difference. Through medical assistance and continuous care, action medeor, together with its Syrian partner organisation WATAN, is enabling seriously ill people to look toward a better future. Good news that gives hope.

“I used to be tired all the time,” Nisreen* says quietly. The eight-year-old girl now lives in Idlib after she had to flee Homs with her family. Nisreen suffers from thalassemia – a genetic blood disorder that can be life-threatening without regular treatment. Because of her condition, she depends on regular blood transfusions and special medication, as without this treatment dangerous iron overload can occur in the body, potentially damaging vital organs.

However, the years of conflict have severely damaged Syria’s healthcare system – medical infrastructure has collapsed in large parts of the country, and for millions of people, access to life-saving care has become a daily struggle. The situation of blood banks is particularly critical: in many regions, functioning facilities, essential equipment, and qualified staff are lacking.

How Targeted Support Improves Nisreen’s Life

To address this challenging situation, action medeor supports the establishment of a national blood bank system in Syria and supplies, among others, the WATAN Center in Idlib with essential medicines.

As a result, Nisreen has been able to receive the urgently needed treatment: she undergoes regular blood transfusions, receives iron chelation therapy, and benefits from close medical monitoring. This combination protects her from complications and gives her body the chance to stabilize.

The impact is clearly visible: Nisreen’s health has improved significantly. She is less exhausted, her blood levels have stabilized, and she can participate more actively in daily life again. Consistent use of her medication plays a crucial role – every tablet helps her stay healthy.

Nisreen’s story shows that even under the most difficult circumstances, targeted medical support can change lives. For her, it means renewed strength, greater stability – and hope for a better future.
