Effective help despite ongoing crisis

After the floods in the DR Congo, our aid continues - project coordinator Emmanuel Limi went to the country to see for himself.

Our project regions in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have been suffering for years from serious conflicts, a lack of government supplies and recurring natural disasters. The areas of Uvira and Kalehe were hit particularly hard in the spring. At the beginning of May, rivers burst their banks and avalanches of mud and stones swept away buildings and fields. Over a thousand people died and many more lost all their belongings.

The flood exacerbated the hardship

Immediately after the natural disaster, the Regional Director for Central Africa, Emmanuel Limi, traveled to the affected areas and expressed his shock: "In the South Kivu region, the floods came out of the mountains and carried large stones with them, which simply wiped away entire villages. The survivors have lost everything, really everything." In many places, all that remains is wastewater-contaminated land and piles of rubble, increasing the risk of diseases such as malaria and cholera. And due to the loss of crops, many people are affected by hunger.

Support in the darkest hours

From the first days after the floods, action medeor has been supporting the region with additional medicines, food and hygiene kits. A mobile clinic is treating the injured, sick and pregnant women. During his trip, Emmanuel Limi saw for himself that these emergency aid measures are working. At the same time, it is also important to Limi to ensure the progress of the projects from which the local people will benefit in the long term. In recent years, for example, action medeor and its partner AFPDE have set up health centers, significantly improving the care of sick people as well as mother-child health. And training for local smallholder farmers and the provision of seeds strengthen food security.

Acting and helping with foresight

The floods caused a few setbacks - some of the training fields were destroyed. Nevertheless, Emmanuel Limi sees positive developments: “The knowledge imparted remains and we are seeing how our work to improve agriculture and health care is taking root.” action medeor is therefore continuing the long-term effective projects and helping to replant destroyed fields and repair damage to sanitary facilities and health stations.
