Photo: action medeor/IDA Syria In focus Transition in Syria: what is needed now After thirteen years of civil war, everything has suddenly changed in Syria: the previous ruler, Bashar al-Assad, has been overthrown. For the first time in many years, the people of Syria have something resembling hope again—hope for a life of peace and security. Quick assistance is currently required The years-long conflict and the intense fighting in recent days have left significant marks: the larger hospitals in the country are only partially operational. Many smaller health centers are no longer functioning at all. A medical emergency team from our partner organization, the Independent Doctors Association (IDA), is currently deployed in hospitals in Aleppo. Therefore, aid supplies such as medicines and medical materials are urgently needed to provide medical treatment for the many patients. Medical supplies are on the way For this reason, action medeor has dispatched another 13-ton shipment from the medicine warehouse in Tönisvorst to Syria. The shipment includes: strong painkillers and antibiotics, antibiotic and fever-reducing medicines for children, bandages, plaster, surgical gloves, and infusion solutions. Beyond this acute emergency aid, we also support the people on the ground in building a strong and resilient healthcare system. For example, we are contributing to the construction of a medicine warehouse in the western part of the country to help stabilize the supply of medications. “The last few days have been historic for the people of Syria, comparable to the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany. We want to do everything we can to help guide the country and its people towards a bright future.” Sid PeruvembaSpokesperson for the board of action medeor We stand with the people of Syria Together with local partner organizations, action medeor has been active in the country since the outbreak of the civil war in 2011, providing medical care to refugee families, children, and other particularly vulnerable groups.
