Tanzania Rottendorf Foundation and action medeor: a strong team for health Supported by the Rottendorf Foundation, action medeor is building a medicine warehouse at the site in Kibaha, Tanzania. On this page you can follow the progress of the construction work up to the start of operations. With this construction project, action medeor and the Rottendorf Foundation are helping to improve healthcare for a growing population and ensure that vital medicines and medical products are available at all times. The new warehouse on the outskirts of the capital Dar es Salaam will enable action medeor to supply healthcare facilities in Tanzania and the neighbouring countries of Malawi, Burundi and Rwanda. The GDP (Good Distribution Practices) standards of the World Health Organisation will also be taken into account in the planning. Current status "Construction is progressing rapidly and we are on schedule. Most of the construction work will be completed by the end of March and the first floor administration shell will be finished by the end of April. The building will then be fitted out with furniture and shelving in May. The concrete floor in the hall is currently being prepared and poured. The terrazzo floor in the administration area has largely been laid and is now being sanded. In the meantime, it no longer looks so chaotic outside either: The kerbstones have already been laid and then the paving will be done quickly." After the photos were taken, the floor was professionally concreted and work on the interior walls was completed. The last construction meeting was also a cause for celebration: the construction progress is exactly as planned. This means that the electrics can already be laid and the roof sheets will be installed next. These will be folded and cut by local tradesmen. The paving work can now also begin. We are also expecting a special guest shortly: the new Tanzanian Minister of Health will visit the construction site and gain an insight into our activities. The building is slowly taking shape. The bricks used are produced sustainably on site, using soil from other construction sites, among other things. This allows for the storage of up to four levels of Euro pallets. About a quarter of the warehouse is planned as a manual storage area for smaller-scale requests, another quarter for order picking and dispatch. The building envelope is being constructed with a reinforced concrete skeleton. The non-load-bearing infill is made with eco-friendly compressed earth-cement bricks (Hydraform). The administrative area offers around 20 office workstations and will be designed as a front annex with integrated greenery. The trees growing there will provide shade during the high temperatures in Tanzania. In the current plan, only the ground floor will be completed, with provisions made for future expansion to the upper floor. The opening is scheduled for 2025. Project Scope Project goal: Establishment of a central medicine warehouse in Tanzania Project area: Tanzania, Kibaha Project duration: 2024 - 2027 Funding volume: €2,040,333 Project Activities Construction and equipping of the pharmaceutical warehouse Implementation of a quality management system Training of warehouse staff Expansion of the upper floor Installation of a solar system How better medicine availability can save lives Treatable illnesses can be addressed more effectively and quickly when medicines are readily available. This is especially important for children under the age of 5, as child mortality in this group remains the highest in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to the UN Sustainable Development Goal Report 2023, one in 14 children in this region died before their fifth birthday in 2021. Many illnesses in young children, such as diarrhea, fever, and other infections, are easily treatable with the right medicines, making such deaths preventable. Therefore, the construction of the medicine warehouse and the resulting improved healthcare provision actively contribute to achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3): "Good Health and Well-being." Facts about action medeor Tanzania Since 2005, action medeor's independent subsidiary “action medeor International Healthcare” has been ensuring sufficient, effective, and high-quality medicine supply in Tanzania. Today, the organization operates three medicine warehouses in Tanzania and employs 49 staff, who also provide training in medical device and laboratory technology. Since 2023, an innovative project has been in place at the Kibaha site: action medeor has opened a production facility for laboratory reagents. Reagents are chemical substances essential for improving diagnostics. The facility is the first of its kind in East Africa. Expanding the site with the new warehouse and staff housing will further improve medicine availability and pharmaceutical expertise in the region.
