Amid unclear information, decisions must be made that can mean the difference between life and death. In these critical moments, a practiced system kicks in at action medeor: An immediate briefing brings together the emergency team, the executive board, and the heads of all relevant departments. Scheffler In remote areas in particular, essential medical products are often lacking. People die from treatable diseases or surgeries can't be performed due to a lack of medicines or materials. Since our founding in 1964, supplying medical aid has been at the heart of our work. In the 4,000-square-meter medicine warehouse of action medeor, we stock numerous medications classified as essential by the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as medical supplies like bandages and equipment such as oxygen concentrators. Often, the most basic things are lacking: functional infrastructure, reliable healthcare, and prospects for the future. That’s why we follow up our acute response with long-term transition and reconstruction projects, implemented together with local partners. In these projects, we strengthen healthcare by building clinics and training professionals such as midwives. We establish disaster preparedness and work with communities to create emergency plans. We promote food security through climate-resilient agriculture and by distributing seeds and tools. And we advocate for the physical and mental well-being of women and children. People were supported directly Every disaster demands an individual response The exact nature of our humanitarian aid depends heavily on the region, local conditions, and logistical possibilities. The following three examples show how we adapt our emergency and disaster aid to even the most difficult requirements to save lives and ensure survival in dignity: In Ukraine, we particularly want to support the people near the front line, as this is where medical care is at its worst. Due to the immense needs, transports of medical supplies from Germany continue to make a major contribution to maintaining supplies on the ground. We also procure winter aid such as clothing, stoves and insulation material locally. And we are establishing permanent services on site, for example through the winter parlour in Mykolaiv or the social pharmacy in Odessa. In 2024, we were able to send several shipments of medical supplies from our Tönisvorst warehouse to the embattled Darfur region - despite the destroyed infrastructure and dangerous transport routes. As the airspace over Sudan was closed, the medicines had to travel 800 km in a refrigerated lorry through Chad alone.
