The EURMED initiative was founded in 2014 by action medeor, Banco Farmaceutico and International Health Partners.

eurmedgrossIt aims to ensure the efficient and effective use of donated medicines and medical supplies. EURMED serves the European healthcare industry by matching product donations to the needs of vulnerable communities around the world. The access to essential medicine and medical supplies is crucial during disaster response. The EURMED initiative aims to enable a vital collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry in Europe to improve the access to medicine and tackle poverty. In an unique way donations of medical supplies can be allocated and channeled by a transparent online donation tool. The online tool was developed by EUROMED in accordance to the WHO standards for drug donations. Furthermore, EURMED simplifies the coordination for donors and for those distributing the medicines. Whilst EURMED provides a safe and responsible way to donate, it reduces the waste level in the supply chain and costs for destructions are avoided.

The official launch of EURMED took place in November 2014 in London in the presence of The Prince of Wales who expressed his hopes that EURMED “will bring even more essential medicines to some of the world’s most vulnerable communities.” Anthony Dunnett, President of International Health Partners highlights that EURMED “matches supply and demand, tracks product to final destination and gathers feedback from the field.”

As the number of disasters and crises situation has reached a new dimension in 2014, EURMED offers a timely opportunity to meet the rising needs for medicine and provide people in need with an access to health services.
