On behalf of the East African Community, action medeor develops concrete measures to improve the production conditions in East Africa.

Between five and 30 percent of the drug market in the East African Community (EAC) is supplied by local manufacturers. However, the quality level of both the individual production sites and the quality management systems differ from company to company. One manufacturer in Kenya and one in Uganda have already reached international standards, but in most other companies conditions are very unsatisfactory. This means that there are significant differences in quality of the medicines produced in East Africa.

In the worst case, medicines are not sufficiently effective or even harmful. The East African Community (EAC) has therefore launched a five-year plan for pharmaceutical manufacturers. Within the framework of this plan, action medeor was commissioned to visit all drug manufacturers in Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda and to develop concrete measures to improve the production conditions together with the EAC. The aim of the project is to ensure all companies meet the rules of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) applicable in the East African Community.

The results of these individual consultations are then incorporated into so-called national GMP roadmaps. For the countries of Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda, the results of the consultations and the deficiencies found will be summarized and specific proposals for the improvement of the situation will be developed, for example political or economic measures.

In a next step, a regional GMP roadmap will be developed by combining the results from Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda with the already existing GMP roadmap for Kenya. This new regional roadmap will be used to identify which measures can be taken at a regional level to improve the situation of drug manufacturers in the East African Community and ensure an optimal availability of high-quality drugs all over East Africa.
