A large part of our supporters have been loyal to us for many years and have witnessed the development of our relief organization firsthand. For those who are not as familiar with action medeor, we trace a few milestones in the following image gallery. ‘No person in this world should suffer from treatable or preventable diseases’ - that was the founding idea of action medeor. To achieve this, volunteers in Tönisvorst on the Lower Rhine collected and sorted surplus medicines from all over Germany to send them to countries in crisis. From 1967, the ‘emergency pharmacy of the world’ had its own generics produced in order to better cater for the special clinical pictures in the recipient countries. The large tablet doses reduce production costs to a fraction of the usual blister packs. Did Mother Teresa spend the night on the couch of co-founder Dr Boekels? Unfortunately, we can no longer verify this rumour - the fact is that Saint Teresa of Calcutta visited us several times. There were also frequent visits from prominent politicians, such as the then German President Richard von Weizsäcker. Speaking of celebrities: Anke Engelke has been involved with our aid organisation since 2003. ‘Something clicked between action medeor and me,’ she says. As an ambassador, she reports on the joint project trips and the effectiveness of the health projects. She also donates the proceeds from charity concerts and prize money from TV shows such as ‘LOL’ (Last One Laughing) or the celebrity special of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’ to action medeor. In both countries, around 70 employees are working to sustainably improve the quality and reliability of healthcare in East Africa. And thanks to the local medicine warehouses, our emergency aid has become even faster. Photo: action medeor/Boris Breuer 1 2 3 4 5
