A persistent drought is leading to extreme food shortages in many parts of Somalia. People are starving because fields cannot be irrigated and harvests fail to materialize. Malnutrition makes children in particular more susceptible to disease. But there is also good news: In our project in Beledweyne, a water pump has been installed in the nearest river. Small farmer Sadiaa reports: “The river has always been there, but we had no way of transporting the water from there to our fields. With the water pump, we can now irrigate our fields without having to worry." This is just one example of our extensive projects in Somalia, which we are implementing together with our local partner WARDI. Thanks to these and other aid measures, people like Sadiaa can feed themselves and their children during the dry season.
