Every country has its own individual national standards regarding the medicinal therapy and the selection of active ingredients. These standards depend on the availability of medicines and the degree of resistance. We constantly monitor the pharmaceutical market as well as national developments. If you need help regarding the selection of the right therapy, the active ingredients, and dosages, our team will be happy to help you.

Resistance problems

Malaria parasites develop resistance to both the repellents (insect sprays) and the medicines. In the last five years, there has been a threatening increase in resistance to artemisin derivatives, that can be traced back to initiate from the Mekong region.

To not further promote resistance, the following procedures are necessary in case of malaria suspicion:

  • Performing a malaria rapid test (or microscopic examination) to exclude a mix-up with other fever diseases
  • Immediate initiation of treatment after the diagnosis to prevent a strong increase of the pathogen
  • Combination therapy with giving at least two different medicines at the same time
  • Dosage by patient's weight to ensure that there is a sufficient but non-toxic amount of active ingredient in their body

Vaccination research

Although research in this field has been ongoing for years, there is currently no vaccine available. Several vaccine candidates have been developed and one vaccine should be tested in a pilot program this year. However, since this vaccine provides only moderate protection, its usage is considered very critical.

In risk areas, mosquito nets are an important preventive measure. Therefore, you will find in our assortment in MediCat also different mosquito nets for various applications.
