It is done: Our school of midwifery in Sierra Leone is now open!

On Saturday, our school of midwifery was inaugurated in Bo, the second largest city of Sierra Leone. We built up this school together with our local partner Caritas Bo. From now on, 50 district nurses will be trained there as midwives every year. Thus, the number of available and practicing midwives in Sierra Leone, above all in the rural areas of the southern and eastern provinces, should be increased to improve the medical care of pregnant women and newborns in these regions.

Currently, only one midwife is available for 1,000 live births in Sierra Leone. There is a high demand for qualified personnel to attend pregnancy and childbirth. So far, there is only one midwifery school in the west and one in the north of the country with about 100 graduates in total annually.
